Super Speeder Georgia Is a Speeding Ticket Tax
By: Larry Kohn and Cory Yager, Georgia Traffic Ticket, Super Speeder Georgia Lawyers Near Me
The Georgia Super Speeder Law (OCGA §40-6-189) adds an extra $200 fine on top of your regular speeding ticket cost, for certain speeding violations.
Many drivers wonder, “What is a super speeder in Georgia?” and “How much does a Super Speeder ticket cost?”
In this article, Atlanta speeding ticket attorney Larry Kohn explains what the super speeder law is, how much a super speeder ticket can cost, and how to pay this additional $200 fine so your license doesn’t get suspended.
What is Super Speeder in Georgia?

To be considered a ‘super speeder’ in Georgia, you have been convicted of speeding at 75 MPH or more on a two-lane road, or at 85 MPH or more or any road or highway in the state.
As a “Super Speeder,” you are now obligated to pay an extra $200 on top of your existing ticket.
This Super Speeder law, put into place in 2010, was designed as a revenue-generating mechanism, to provide funds to rural hospitals.
How Do I Know if I’m a Super Speeder in Georgia?

Your initial speeding ticket does not indicate Super Speeder status; that designation is determined after conviction and processed separately by GA DDS.
Most people have questions like, “Is 15 and over a Super Speeder in Georgia?” Not necessarily. Georgia’s Super Speeder law is based on your actual speed and type of road, not how far over the speed limit you were. An example:
- Driving 70 in a 55 zone= 15 miles over, but not considered a super speeder
- Driving 80 in a 65 zone on a two-lane road= You are a Super Speeder
So, it’s not the “15 miles over” that triggers the Super Speeder fine, it’s your total speed and the type of road you drove on that matter.
How Many Points is a Super Speeder in GA?

There are no points assigned for a Super Speeder ticket itself in Georgia. Points come from the underlying speeding violation.
Here is how Georgia assigns license points based on your speed:
- 15-18 mph over- 2 points
- 19-23 mph over- 3 points
- 24-33 mph over- 4 points
- 34+ mph over- 6 points
The Super Speeder fee is a separate $200 financial penalty and does not increase your point total.
How Much is a Super Speeder Ticket in Georgia?

The cost of a Super Speeder ticket in Georgia includes the standard speeding fine, plus the super speeder fine mandated by the State of Georgia.
How much a speeding ticket costs depends on the jurisdiction in which you were stopped. Generally, the higher the speed over the limit, the more money you’ll have to pay.
But, because of the Super Speeder GA fine, you’ll pay an additional $200 on top of that cost.
Georgia Super Speeder Penalties

If you do not pay the Super Speeder fine, DDS will suspend your Georgia driving privileges. For Georgia license holders, this results in license suspension; for out-of-state drivers, Georgia will notify your home state of the suspension.
If you are a Georgia license holder, you will also need to pay a $50 license reinstatement fee before your driving privileges are restored.
Even though you have 120 days to pay before license suspension, don’t wait until the last minute. The license reinstatement process itself may take several days or weeks and it takes a while to update in the GA DDS computer systems.
Does the Super Speeder Law Apply to Out-of-State Drivers?

Yes, the Georgia super speeder law applies to out-of-state drivers, as well. For out-of-state ‘super speeders,’ your home state may impose additional license points or suspension, if the underlying offense was serious enough.
Plus, if you get convicted of Super Speeder GA, and don’t pay within 120 days of receiving the Super Speeder Notice in the mail, your license will be suspended, so you are no longer allowed to drive within the State of Georgia until that additional $200 fine (and license reinstatement fee) is fully paid to GA DDS.
This can cause issues if you choose to drive within the Peach State again. So, since the DDS can suspend your license if you fail to pay, you can be pulled over for driving with a suspended license, which is classified as a misdemeanor under Georgia law.
Drivers should check with their home state’s DMV to determine how this super speeder violation will impact their driving record.
How Will You Be Notified of a Super Speeder Fine in Georgia?

Drivers convicted of a Super Speeder violation in Georgia receive notification of the additional fine via first-class mail 30 days after conviction. This letter will be sent to the address on file at DDS, so keep your address and license status updated.
IMPORTANT: Georgia law presumes that the letter has been received once it is mailed. This means that even if drivers never physically receive the notice, they are still legally responsible for paying the fine.
